Thus the Copenhagen summit was not much of a success. It was always absurd to assume it could be at a conference with dozens of world leaders - each with their peculiar interests - and disagreement about the extent of the threat of global warming. Stirring speeches that unite world politicians are the stuff of Hollywood fiction - see: 2012 - and not international reality. The third world was whining and wanted handouts, China and India were not about to be lectured by Western nations who grew rich on dirty energy and now wanted to deny the Chinese and Indians that option, and Obama was disorganized (he walked in abruptly on a meeting between China and Brazil) and the U.S. president’s own plan-of-action remains deadlocked in Congress.
In the end the only thing written down was a proposal to buy developing nations to not cut forests, and the U.S., China, India and Brazil are still in negotiations over a common deal to reduce emissions.
The week-long event came just after the disclosure of several emails that revealed that climate change discourse is often political, with proponents trying to silence critics, and promoters themselves secretly admitting that they cannot account for an increase in temperature over the last two decades.
One would think that this recent information would have lead to some public skepticism about whether such hyped supposed need for global action may be overstated. But, alas, that wasn’t the case. The conference was surrounded - inside and out - with hysteria about the warming of the planet.
Ironically, during the conference a blizzard dumped 4 inches of snow on Copenhagen and both President Obama and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi had to end their trips and return to Washington earlier than planned in order to land before a massive snow storm overshadows the capital - which is expected to leave 20inches of snow:
In a strange twist, a Washington snowstorm is forcing Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California, to make an early departure from a global warming summit here in Denmark.
Pelosi told CNN that military officials leading her Congressional delegation have urged the 21 lawmakers to leave Copenhagen several hours earlier than scheduled on Saturday.
The Speaker said she has agreed to the new travel plan so that lawmakers can get back to Washington before much of the expected storm wallops the nation’s capital.
And Obama arrives at Andrews Air Force Base:
The Washington storm is a December record! Take a hint!
The ubiquitous instablogger would like to share his approach to comprehending this problem, being much delighted with M. Kerjman’s (on these pages author) “Of Planetary Change Short Story” http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Of+Planetary+Change+Short+Story-a01074017802
Enjoy his clear mind as I did reading his to the point essay.
The global climate is slowly warming. This changes local weather patterns, often making them more extreme.
