(Check out the logo!) al-Jazeera has to be among the most hated institutions by neo-conservatives and Zionists (sometimes one-and-the-same). al-Jazeera is a prominent voice against U.S. imperialism and Israeli oppression in the region. It is not that Arabs were oblivious to such facts or indifferent before al-Jazeera. Not by a long shot. But what al-jazeera did is give the Arabs a collective voice against such foreign injustices in their region.
Arab state media is stall and most Arab governments are clients of the U.S. thus their press has strict orders not to play to Arab nationalism and Arab patriotism. al-Jazeera, by contrast, does not hold back.
al-Jazeera came on the stage in the mid-1990s and quickly become the most prominent Arab channel. It criticized Arab governments in ways that Arabs had only seen the Western press do. It brought to the Living Room the occupation of Palestine. And the Arabs never saw a war in their region broadcast like the way al-Jazeera provided 24/7 live coverage of the Iraq war.
Needless to say, this got al-Jazeera on the U.S. Enemy List which just provides that U.S. words about democracy and freedom are empty and abuses of such noble words. The U.S. only wants puppet democracy. The only democracy to be tolerated is the democracy that makes itself a client of America. The only free speech to be accepted is the speech that is pro-U.S. and Israeli wars and occupation.
Thus The U.S. began a campaign against al-Jazeera after initially praising it: the Bush administration boycotted it (for years), Rumsfield attacked and U.S. (non-Arabic speaking) “journalists” and pundits joined in and further demonized a channel they could not watch nor understand. But the U.S. media often takes its cues from the U.S. government when reporting foreign affairs. The Emir of Qatar stated that all Congressional visits to the nation complain about al-Jazeera.
The nerve of these people! al-Jazeera is not a hateful channel it just criticizes U.S. imperialism. But U.S. members of Congress think that their nation is not to be criticizes; to have its cake and eat it to (sorry for the cliche). Why doesn’t Congress complain about Fox News which spews real bigotry all the time? O’, I forgot, bigotry against Arabs and Muslims is to be tolerated and cheered in the U.S.
Israel and its supporters hate al-Jazeera, and Egyptian-born, Israeli-American billionaire Haim Saban has tired repeatedly to buy al-Jazeera.
“Egyptian-born Jewish businessman Haim Saban is negotiating with Qatar’s emir the purchase of 50 percent of the Al Jazeera television network, the independent Egyptian newspaper Al-Mesryoon reported earlier this week.”
Saban is a billionaire, but an idiot. He wants the Arabs to be pro-Israeli. He knows al-Jazeera is the voice of the region. So he thinks that if he just buys the network and makes it pro-Israel the Arabs will follow suit. What moronic logic!!! The Arabs would then know Zionist Saban bought the channel and would begin to see it as nothing more than the propaganda channel it would be. The channel would be switched, and that would be the end of it. Saban has offered billions for the channel, it would be a completely wasted investment. How this guy become rich in the first place is beyond me? The Emir of Qatar was already rejected past offers, and hopeful he will this time. It would be a shame to lose al-Jazeera.
Saban would be better placed to use his billions to help Palestinians and push Israel toward a peace agreement. That would win the hearts of the Arabs. That would make them relatively pro-Israeli. But he’s too stupid and only see what is superficial.
it covered domestic issues that no body dared to speak out in this country. One day, the foreign minister was interviewed and questioned by the journalist and he had to defend himself, and defend the government's view that aljazeera "has" to run independently, and without any censorship.
All other media in this country is censored, from newspapers to local tv channels. but this one has managed to be an exception and slipped away. i was shocked myself to see the foreign minister in a powerless situation.
