No More Mail on Saturday?
Marco Villa | Jan 29 2009

The United States Postal Service, a government agency, is considering cutting off Saturday delivery. USPS already does not deliver mail on Sunday so the move, if implemented, would end weekend service.

This is just further proof that the Postal Service’s monopoly on first-class mail is unwarranted. The Postal Service has never made a profit and currently is seeking, wait for it, a bailout. Its government franchise on first-class mail should come to an end. Better yet, it should be put on a path to privatization.

The Postal Service consideration is financial. It lost $2.8 billion in 08 and could be down $6 billion down this year. So instead of learning to be more efficient like FedEx and UPS or be privatized, the Postal Service is complaining to Congress and demanding more tax prayer money be washed down the ineffective bureaucracy.

What is interesting about the Postal Service is that its creation is rooted in the Constitution. That Constitution gives Congress the authority to create a Post Office. Though that does not mean the Post Office must continue to exist. The 1790’s were a different time and America now has two world-class, the world-class, mail carriers so its time for the USPS to deliver its last piece of mail.
